W3C
In 1994, five years after inventing the World Wide Web, the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) was founded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and since this time it has provided guidelines that developers should follow when they are building websites. Nowadays W3C already have over 500 members and 60 full-time staffs. Their mission is "to lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing protocols and guidelines that ensure long-term growth for the Web."
W3C Web Standard
W3C had a great influence on the foundations of today's internet by introducing standards such as HTML and XML in 1998. Today's W3C's principle are the "accessibility, internationalization, device independence, mobile access and quality assurance". When it comes to developing sustainable displayable on every browser or operating system, following the W3C XHTML (extensive markup language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheet).
The rules they outline are based on the best practices and while websites don't have to comply to be viewed correctly in Internet Explorer and other popular browsers that cater to incorrect design practices, there are a number of compelling reasons to ensure that you or your designer ensure that the W3C guidelines are followed and that your site is brought into compliance.
Here is a short summary of the benefits that W3C standards compliance brings to a website:
- Better compatibility across different browsers or platforms: Allow cross browser compatibility (Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc…), different platforms (MAC, PC, etc…)
- Better user experience, user can browse quickly: pages are lighter, loading is quicker
- Easier maintenance and more flexibility by leveraging the power of CSS and HTML
- Search engines index more accurately keywords on your content since markup is W3C valid and optimized.
- Pages being generally lighter, web crawlers come more often keeping your site up to date in search engines result pages.
- Having a compliant website up to recognized standards in the web design industry also brings more recognition to a brand name
Some existing tools such as the W3C Markup Validator and other validation tools help us test your website to be able to guarantee a quality up to the best standards in the web design industry.
With valid markup, tableless design and clean code, your website is compatible with a large number of browsers on different platforms and monitors allowing a better user experience and enabling your brand name to gain more trust from visitors.
